Red Team and Adversary Simulation

Insider Threat Simulation

We test what an employee, contractor or partner can do with their real permissions. We show which data a malicious insider could access and whether this would be detected.

What it is

Insider threat simulation covers scenarios where the attacker is not external. The assessment uses the real permissions of a specific role in your organization. This role may be a customer service agent, software contractor or departing employee. The aim is to measure whether misuse of access and actions such as bulk data extraction are detected.

Scope

  • Mapping the application, file share and database permissions of selected roles
  • Attempts to access customer and staff data beyond business need
  • Bulk download, sending data externally by email and removable media scenarios
  • Limits of supplier and contractor remote access
  • Response of data loss prevention (DLP) and log monitoring controls

The need

When organizations need it

  • After an incident where an employee or supplier misused their access.
  • When call center, outsourced or contractor teams are granted broad data access.
  • When you want to confirm that the safeguards required by data protection law against unlawful access to personal data also cover internal access.

Method

How we work

  1. Role selection

We identify risky roles with you and write a realistic misuse scenario for each.

  2. Permission analysis

We compare the systems and data the role can actually access with business requirements.

  3. Scenario

We demonstrate access without copying data and use only test data in exfiltration steps.

  4. Detection review

We review together which behavior triggered an alert and who received it.

Outcome

What you have at the end

You see which roles access more data than their job requires and which misuse goes undetected. You can adjust access and monitoring for each role.

Frequently asked questions

Are our employees monitored during this work?

No. The scenario is conducted with test accounts you designate. Actual employee behavior is not examined.

Is real customer data accessed?

We show that access is possible without copying data. Only dummy data prepared for this work is used in exfiltration steps.

Which roles should we start with?

Roles with bulk access to customer data, system administrators and outsourced teams are usually prioritized. We make the selection together based on your data inventory.
