Application and Software Security
Secure Code Review
The code managing flows such as payments or loan applications is the most valuable and frequently changed part of your application. We review these flows line by line. We find authorization and business logic flaws at the source that automated analysis and external testing miss.
Secure Code Review and Application Security
Some vulnerabilities are visible only in the code. An authorization error that occurs only for a specific role and sequence of actions can be easily missed by external testing. PCI DSS requires custom software to be code-reviewed before release.
The need
When organizations need it
- When a critical module such as payments is rewritten or before it goes live.
- When acquiring a software company or taking over an application developed by an outsourced team.
- When penetration tests repeatedly find the same type of authorization error each year.
- When an auditor or PCI DSS assessment requests evidence of code review before release.
Questions
What this work answers
- Is there a business logic flaw that bypasses authorization controls?
- Is each customer's data properly separated from others in the code?
- Are any keys or passwords exposed in the code or repository history?
- Which automated analysis results indicate real risks, and which are noise?
Secure Code Review and Application Security
What we do
-
Manual Secure Code Review
We trace every call that crosses a trust boundary in the code, from user input to the database.
-
Business Logic and Authorization Analysis
We examine the code for ways a user could skip an approval step or exceed a limit.
-
Static Code Analysis (SAST)
We integrate static code scanning into your development process. We tune the rules so that real findings are distinguished from noise.
-
Dynamic Application Security Testing (DAST)
We design automated tests for the running application. These tests also cover flows that require login.
-
Software Composition Analysis (SCA)
We determine whether a known vulnerability in an open source component you use is actually reachable in your application.
-
Secrets Leak Scanning
We identify keys and passwords exposed in the code and repository history.
-
Threat Modeling
We identify how a new feature could be abused at the design stage, before any code is written.
-
Security Architecture Review
We assess inter-service trust and customer data separation at the architecture level.
-
Remediation Support and Fix Verification
We design the fix with your developers. We re-review the change and close the finding.
-
Cryptography Usage Review
We find implementation errors in encryption and signing code. We also review how keys are stored.
Scope of Review
We review authentication, authorization, and session controls. We check how input, files, and external service calls are handled. Cryptography, tenant isolation, and limit calculations are also in scope.
How we work
We first select the most critical flows with you. We then search the rest of the code for every mistake pattern we find, closing other instances of the same issue.
What we need from you
The repository and version in scope, a brief architecture summary, and a list of critical flows are required.
Deliverables
What you receive
A file and line reference for each finding. Explanation of the conditions under which it can be exploited. Where else the same mistake pattern appears in the code. Rule suggestions for automated scanning.
NoteCode review does not replace penetration testing. When performed together, they trace an externally observed finding to its root cause in the code.
