Industrial Remote Access Security
We review how vendor and maintenance connections reach your control network. We check whether it is possible to audit who connects, when, and to which device.
What it is
Industrial remote access is the method by which machine vendors and maintenance firms connect to control systems. The review covers how these connections are managed for authentication, approval, and duration. It determines whether sessions are recorded and whether access is closed when work ends. These paths often bypass the corporate network and connect directly to the control network.
Scope
- Inventory of vendor and maintenance connections and the devices they reach
- Review of multi-factor authentication and per-connection approval process
- Whether sessions are recorded and access duration is limited
- Identification of permanent connections that remain open
- Verification of whether remote access passes through the corporate network and DMZ
The need
When organizations need it
- When a machine vendor requests permanent remote access for maintenance.
- When asked whether a risk from a vendor network could reach your production environment.
- When an audit or regulator requires remote access to be auditable.
Method
How we work
-
Inventory
With your operations team, we identify which vendor accesses which device and by which path.
-
Review
We assess each connection for authentication, approval, recording, and duration.
-
Recommendation
We propose a structure that converts permanent connections into on-demand, approved access.
Outcome
What you have at the end
An inventory of all remote access paths into your control network and an improvement plan to make each one approved, recorded, and time-limited.
Frequently asked questions
Does vendor access need to be completely shut off?
No. The goal is not to remove access but to make it auditable. The connection is opened when needed, recorded, and closed when the work ends.
Is our existing VPN sufficient?
A VPN encrypts the connection, but alone does not control who connects, when, or to which device. The key question is whether access is recorded, approved, and time-limited.
