Reverse Engineering

Software and Binary Reverse Engineering

We analyze the compiled code of software without source code to determine its actual behavior. We show which servers it connects to and what data it sends.

What it is

You do not see the source code of much of the software you purchase. Reverse engineering analyzes the compiled form to reveal its behavior. The software's network connections, collected data and update behavior are identified. This allows you to compare the vendor's claims with the software's actual operation.

Scope

  • Running the software in a controlled environment and observing its behavior
  • Identifying the network connections and the servers it connects to
  • Detecting the data it collects and transmits
  • Reviewing the update behavior and its source
  • Searching for hidden functions triggered under specific conditions

The need

When organizations need it

  • When you need to know what data a closed-source agent to be installed on every computer actually collects.
  • When you are unsure if a supplier's software does more than it claims.
  • When you want to assess a product's security before making a purchase decision.

Method

How we work

  1. Observation

We run the software in a controlled environment and record its network and file behavior.

  2. Analysis

We identify the source of each observed behavior in the compiled code.

  3. Report

We document what the software actually does, with evidence and its location in the code.

Outcome

What you have at the end

An evidence-based breakdown of the software's network connections, collected data and update behavior, to support your decision to buy or use it.

Frequently asked questions

How much can you see without source code?

We can see most of the behavior. Compiled code is sufficient to trace what the software does step by step. Source code is not required.

Is this analysis lawful?

We analyze only software you own or have written permission to examine. Scope and permissions are defined in writing at the outset.
