Attack Surface and Attack Path Analysis
Attack Path Analysis to Critical Assets
We map the paths from defined starting points to your most critical systems. We prioritize the changes that block these paths earliest.
What it is
An attack path is a chain of steps an attacker could follow from a starting point to a critical system. The starting point may be an internet-facing server or a compromised user account. The analysis models these chains on the access model and identifies choke points that many paths traverse. The most important paths are validated by controlled testing.
Scope
- Defining critical assets with you (payments, customer data, production)
- Scenarios starting from the internet, a compromised account or a supplier connection
- Path calculation combining identity, network and cloud steps
- Identifying choke points traversed by many paths
- Validating priority paths through controlled testing
- Mapping each step to a MITRE ATT&CK technique
The need
When organizations need it
- When management asks if customer data could be reached if a user account is compromised.
- When a limited security budget must be allocated to the work that most reduces risk.
- When you want to select the most realistic scenario before a Red Team exercise.
Method
How we work
-
Targets and starting points
We select the critical assets and realistic starting points with you.
-
Path calculation
We map the paths from start to target on the access model and rank them by length and required privileges.
-
Validation
We test the most likely paths in a controlled manner. Tested paths are marked separately from those only modeled.
-
Remediation plan
We determine which single change blocks the most paths and rank all changes by this effect.
Outcome
What you have at the end
You know which paths reach your critical systems and where to block them. You have a plan that closes the most paths with minimal changes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between attack path analysis and a Red Team exercise?
Attack path analysis derives all possible paths from the model and prioritizes them. A Red Team exercise follows one path as a real attacker would and measures whether your defense detects it.
How is it different from an identity security review?
An identity review focuses on privilege paths in Active Directory and cloud identities. This analysis combines identity steps with network, application and cloud steps on the same path.
