EDR/XDR Effectiveness Assessment
We use controlled tests to measure which attacker behaviors your endpoint protection detects, blocks, and misses.
What it is
EDR records process, file, and network activity on endpoints and responds to suspicious behavior. XDR extends this visibility to email, identity, and cloud data. The product's actual effectiveness depends on your policies, exclusions, and which systems have the agent installed. The assessment measures the product in your own environment with your settings.
Scope
- Running defanged behaviors selected from MITRE ATT&CK techniques on test systems
- Marking telemetry, alert, and block results separately for each behavior
- Reviewing policy, exception, and exclusion lists
- Comparing agent deployment coverage to the asset inventory
- Checking tamper protection settings
The need
When organizations need it
- Before renewing your EDR license or selecting a new product.
- When a ransomware incident occurs in your sector and you want to know if your product would stop similar behavior.
- When it is unclear how much exclusions added after performance complaints have weakened protection.
Method
How we work
-
Test plan
We create a test list based on the behaviors of groups targeting your sector and select test machines with you.
-
Execution
We run each behavior in a controlled manner and record the product's response with a timestamp.
-
Result matrix
We mark telemetry, alert, and block results separately for each behavior.
-
Improvement
We recommend policy and exclusion changes and repeat the same tests after the changes.
Outcome
What you have at the end
You receive a result matrix showing which behaviors your product detects, blocks, and misses. The impact of recommended policy changes is measured with the same tests.
Frequently asked questions
Aren't the vendor's independent test results sufficient?
Tests like MITRE ATT&CK Evaluations measure the product in a common test environment built for all participants. Your policies, exclusions, and agent coverage can affect the result.
Is real malware used in the tests?
No. Behaviors are run in a defanged form and only on test machines you approve.
Can you compare multiple EDR products?
Yes. During product selection, the same test list is applied to each product under the same conditions.
